Tizanidine sold under the brand name Zanaflex possesses the effect of making the patient sleepy, dizzy, and tired, slowing down their reaction. It is not advisable to take the medicine if you are going to engage in an activity that requires you to be alert, such as driving, using tools or machines, etc.
Tizanidine belongs to a category of drugs called muscle relaxants. Drinking alcohol over Tizanidine is not recommended as it can increase the risk of side effects such as sleepiness and drowsiness. Tizanidine can also be used to treat refractory sleep disturbance (Wagstaff, A.J. and Bryson, H.M., 1997. Tizanidine).
Study on Tizanidine Used To Treat Sleep Disturbance
Purpose of the study: To study the Effects of Tizanidine for refractory sleep disturbance in disabled children with spastic quadriplegia.
Method: 21 spastic quadriplegic children with severe sleep disturbance not improved by conventional therapies were administered Tizanidine. All these patients showed abnormalities of both the induction and maintenance of sleep.
Dosage: Tizanidine was given in doses of 0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg per day, divided into two or three doses. If the drowsiness was significant during the day, Tizanidine was only given just before bedtime.
Findings: The study found that in 13 patients (61.9%), the induction and maintenance of sleep were improved. No detectable side effects were found except a facial pallor in a couple of patients (9.5%) whose treatment was discontinued.
Conclusions: The study concluded that Tizanidine directly affects the induction of sleep and promotes muscular relaxation, which promotes good sleep. It stated that Tizanidine could be used to treat refractory sleep disturbance in spastic quadriplegic patients (Tanaka H, Fukuda I, Miyamoto A, Oka R, Cho K, Fujieda K).
